Success is Not What You Do…It’s How You FEEL

I was recently on a business trip in Houston and had an opportunity to dine with my dear friend and mentor, Jennifer Ashby.  Nowadays, dining for us has shifted from fancy restaurants with great wine to taking bites in-between caring for our very busy boys.  Nonetheless, this dinner was exactly what the universe ordered.  At one point, Jennifer said to me, “Success for me is no longer my title or what I have, it’s a feeling.”

Hearing this from one of the most inspirational, make-it happen leaders caused me to pause and think back on an experience I had about five years ago with my best friend, Kristin Van Gompel…

Kristin and I have seen each other through many of life’s twists and turns.  Five years ago, we were both living in the San Francisco bay area and at a crossroads.  On 4th of July weekend, we made a big, and perhaps slightly IMPULSIVE, decision to move back to San Diego.

On our road trip down interstate five, we made a very specific decision that we would not focus on what we wanted to DO in our new hometown, but rather who we wanted to BE.  We called it our “emotional bucket list.”

The list included these elements:

  • Adventurous
  • Spiritual
  • Authentic
  • Serving
  • Introspective
  • Joyful
  • Generous
  • Rested
  • Healing
  • Empathetic
  • Expansive
  • Prosperous

From this empowered space of BEING, I don’t think either one of us was prepared for the lives we were manifesting.  We were invited to book signings, charity events, art shows, and plays.  We were offered bigger and better jobs and met new mentors along the way.  We did yoga, walked the beach, and took advantage of all the natural beauty San Diego living had to offer.

During our era of “rapid expansion,” we also recognized that by focusing on success as a FEELING: the right opportunities, husbands, friendships, experiences, and prosperity would eventually come to us with ease and grace.

This mindset continues to serve us well as we excel in our careers, and grow personally each and every day.  Two years ago, Kristin saw me through another transformation when I married the man of my dreams and welcomed our spirited son, Kai, shortly there after.  This summer, I was honored to speak at Kristin’s wedding; she married an incredible man who supports her adventurous spirit, and insatiable appetite for continuous improvement.

In the thick of running the day-to-day treadmill of life, it can be incredibly difficult to stay in the right energetic space.   During these stressful times, I try to remind myself to check in on the doing of my personal and professional life, and make sure that it aligns with that bucket list of feelings EARLY & OFTEN!
